The pain

Powdery mildew in Kalanchoe is caused by the obligate biotroph fungus Erysiphe sedi. The main symptom is characterized by white or gray powder like growth of mycelia covering the surface of leaves, stems and flowers. Once a plant is infected by powdery mildew, the spores can quickly be spread mechanically or by wind, thereby infecting other healthy plants. Powdery mildew thrives in warm and dry climates with moderate to high humidity levels which makes it difficult to control.

The gain

Several prevention and management strategies—such as frequent use of fungicides, high dosages of light and sulfur burning and implementing strict hygiene measures—are available, but none can fully eliminate the pathogen from the environment.
