At Dümmen Orange Uganda, the commitment to Health and Safety transcends mere compliance — it forms the core of the farm's ethos. Barbara Najjuma, Uganda's Health and Safety Manager, tells us about the work done to boost health and safety in the region.

Journeying towards zero incidents

Barbara is leading initiatives to elevate Health and Safety standards across Africa. Quarterly meetings facilitate knowledge sharing and problem-solving, emphasizing risk assessments, training, and procedural adherence to mitigate incidents and instill a safety culture.

Moreover, consistent efforts in Uganda, including comprehensive employee training, have yielded tangible results, significantly reducing injury rates.

The results speak volumes

Uganda saw a notable decrease in injury rates, with an injury rate of 0.2 in 2023. However, Barbara stresses the broader sustainability perspective, highlighting the interconnectedness of Health and Safety with ESG principles—environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and governance.

She poses a critical question: "If we don’t care for the health and well-being of our employees and the community, what would the future look like for us all?"

Yaeger Adlam, Managing Director in Uganda, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of standardized protocols and a unified safety culture across all locations to drive continuous improvement.
