The pain

Powdery mildew in rose is caused by the obligate biotroph fungus Podosphaera pannosa. The main symptom is characterized by a white cotton-like growth of mycelia covering the surface of leaves, stems and flower buds. Infected leaves often become distorted, curled, chlorotic and the overall plant vigor is compromised.  Once a plant is infected by powdery mildew, the spores can quickly be spread mechanically or by wind, thereby infecting other healthy plants. Powdery mildew thrives in warm and dry climates with moderate to high humidity levels which makes it difficult to control.

Frequent use of fungicides cannot completely eliminate the fungus and often leads to harmful effects on the environment and human health, therefore natural resistance is required.
